Aaaaaaaan now to close the works about fallout, the one and only "third" in my heart, New Vegas!
I recently began an new playthrough of this game with a mod made by one of the Lead designers Paul J. Sawyer, the kind of mod wich makes the game even more challenging and closer to the feeling of danger you could have with the original fallout games.
With years i understood more the reasons Fallout 3 was more liked than NV despite the best quality of the second. Nowadays games are considered as products to appeal masses and Fallout 3 has been made in this way and following the pattern of a sandbox RPG: exploration, dungeons and treasure, fights, and an effing "epic" quest.
Sure fallout 3 had a strong visual identity, some good writting ideas helping the player to feel being more "inside the story" (the father figure) but when you really look at the core few good arts remain: it still talks about a player fighting monsters and rotten guys, or monsters and good guys, blac or white, simple as this.
New Vegas has been flayed by lots of problems, one year to craft agame with an engine you dont know at all when you are known to be a company who often has problems with bugs.... And despite this this game was far more complex, sure it was less appealing but more coherent, and curiously the monsters wore human masks, and even rascallions can have some redeeming sides ( great khans buy example )
Shades of grey are always more interresting than mindless brutes or evil doing, beiong a bastard can always follow a reason or a cause and that's the reason NV will be for me the true third opus. Fallout 3 was a nice game, but i always consider it as a spin off. Even if the struggle for survival, the decaying world and adventure looks fine, Fallout was more about men than monsters: muties could talk and reason, ghouls were'nt future zombies, raiders were'nt mindless cannibals and most of times mere humans were worst than all of them.
If fallout 3 has been made for teenagers, New Vegas show the true face of a mature game and that's the most important for me.
For this Compo i decided to remain simple: the burried alive courier's hand holding a card, his role presented by the joker, the two bullet holes showing the beginning of the story, and the nuclear symbols to resume the context. It was hard to work on New Vegas Itself so i preferred representing the remparts and the Lucky 38 tower. No less no more, i hope it's enough and you will like it.
Don't hesitate to add your critics and opinions, enjoy!!!
